Jest profesorem doktorem habilitowanym w zakresie nauk technicznych. Od
ponad trzydziestu lat zajmuje się nowoczesnymi technologiami. W 1993 r. założył Comarch – pierwszą firmę w Polsce opartą na wiedzy.
Ukończył Akademię Górniczo-Hutniczą w Krakowie w 1976 roku. W latach 90-tych był profesorem zwyczajnym w AGH, w której kierował Katedrą Telekomunikacji. Mając 39 lat, odebrał nominację profesorską z rąk Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej Lecha Wałęsy. Ukończył szkolenie menedżerskie w Japonii, był konsultantem naukowym France Telecom oraz pełnił funkcję dyrektora pełnomocnego Teletraffic Research Centre na Uniwersytecie w
Adelajdzie (Australia). Prowadził projekty badawcze w laboratoriach w Stanach
Zjednoczonych i Kanadzie. Jest autorem ponad stu publikacji z zakresu transmisji danych i teleinformatyki oraz sześciu książek z zakresu teleinformatyki m.in. Modelling and control of dynamic flows in communication networks (Springer, 1988) oraz “Real Time Network Management” (North Holland, 1991), a także około stu publikacji naukowych w czasopismach specjalistycznych, między innymi w „IEEE Transactions on Communications”, „IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications” czy „Operations Research” . W 2004 r. Profesor Filipiak został odznaczony przez Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej Krzyżem Kawalerskim Orderu Odrodzenia Polski za wybitne zasługi dla rozwoju telekomunikacji i teleinformatyki, a w 2012 r. Krzyżem Oficerskim Orderu Odrodzenia Polski
za wybitne zasługi dla rozwoju gospodarki narodowej oraz za osiągnięcia w działalności charytatywnej i społecznej. W 2013 r. otrzymał prestiżową nagrodę IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Industry Leader Award 2012 za wkład w rozwój komunikacji i technologii informatycznej.
Od 2015 r. jest ekspertem Narodowej Rady Rozwoju w sekcji „Gospodarka, praca,
przedsiębiorczość”. W 2016 roku Prezydent RP przyznał profesorowi Januszowi Filipiakowi Indywidualną Nagrodę Gospodarczą Prezydenta RP za szczególne zasługi dla polskiej przedsiębiorczości.
Janusz Filipiak holds a Professor’s title in technical sciences. For over thirty years now, he has
been interested in advanced technologies. In 1993, Janusz Filipiak established Comarch – the first
Polish company based on knowledge.
In the nineties, he was an ordinary professor at the AGH University of Science and Technology in
Kraków, where he was the Head of the Telecommunications Department for eight years. At the
age of 39, he was awarded a Professor’s title by the President of the Republic of Poland.
He completed a managerial course in Japan. He also worked as a scientific consultant for France
Telecom and held the function of director plenipotentiary at the Teletraffic Research Center at the
University of Adelaide (Australia). He conducted research projects in laboratories in the United
States and Canada. He is an author of over one hundred publications on data transmission and
teleinformatics, six books on teleinformatics (three of them were published in the USA and in
Western Europe) and around one hundred scientific articles. These have been published in many
well-known specialist magazines, including ‘IEEE Transactions on Communications’, ‘IEEE Journal
on Selected Areas in Communications’ and ‘Operations Research’. Professor Filipiak is an author
of six books, including ‘Modelling and Control of Dynamic Flows in Communications Networks’
(Springer Verlag, 1988) and ‘Real Time Network Management’ (North Holland, 1991). He was the
publisher of ‘Telecommunication Services for Developing Economies’ (Elsevier, 1991).
In 2004, Professor Filipiak was honoured by the President of the Republic of Poland with the
Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for outstanding contributions to the development of
telecommunications and information technology, and in 2012 was honoured with the Officer’s
Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for his outstanding contribution to the national economic
development and achievements in charity and social activities.
In 2013, Professor Filipiak also received the prestigious IEEE Communications Society
Distinguished Industry Leader Award 2012 for his contribution to the development of the
communications industry and IT technologies.
Since 2015, he has been an expert in the National Development Council formed by the President
of the Republic of Poland. In 2016, the President of the Republic of Poland recognised Professor
Janusz Filipiak for his service to Polish business, by awarding him an Individual Prize.
